Every drywall job we estimate starts with the same question: can we patch this, or does it need to come out? In Longview's climate, that decision matters more than most homeowners realize. East Texas humidity, our clay-soil foundation movement, and the age of the housing stock all push some 'small problems' into the replace column faster than you'd expect.
When Repair Is the Right Call
Holes under 6 inches β almost always patchable with backing and three coats of mud. Hairline cracks β re-tape and skim, usually a 2-day fix. Nail pops β popped fasteners can be reset and the resulting bump filled in a single day. Minor water stains where the leak is confirmed fixed, the drywall tests dry on a moisture meter, and there's no visible or smelled mold. Isolated corner bead damage from impact β bead can be cut out, replaced, and re-mudded.
When You Must Replace
Active mold growth β mold cannot be cleaned out of drywall. The paper face is organic and the gypsum core holds moisture. Any drywall with visible mold or a musty smell must be removed and disposed of as contaminated material. In East Texas humidity, mold can colonize wet drywall in 24 to 48 hours. Soft or failing drywall β if you can push your finger into it, it's done. Fire damage β heat-damaged drywall loses structural integrity even where it didn't burn. Pre-1978 drywall with asbestos in joint compound β testing required before any disturbance; if positive, removal is a licensed abatement job.
Cost Comparison: Patch vs Replace
Small patch with texture match: $150 to $600. Full sheet replacement with texture match: $400 to $800 per sheet. Whole-wall replacement: $800 to $2,000 depending on size. Whole-room replacement after water damage: $2,500 to $6,000. Mold remediation plus replacement: $3,000 to $10,000+ depending on extent. The math usually favors aggressive replacement when mold or water damage is involved β a $4,000 replacement today is far cheaper than a $30,000 mold remediation in two years.
The Longview Climate Factor
We average 49 inches of rain per year and 80-percent-plus summer humidity. The implication for drywall: even small leaks lead to fast mold growth, and 'I'll dry it out and paint over it' rarely works. We strongly recommend any homeowner with a roof leak, plumbing leak, or AC condensate problem get a moisture meter check before painting. We do these checks free as part of any estimate visit.
The Honest Recommendation
When in doubt, cut a small inspection hole and look at the back side of the drywall. If the paper is wet, stained, or smells, replace. If it's clean and dry, patch. We'd rather tell you 'you can DIY this patch in an afternoon' than upsell you on a replacement you don't need β that honesty is how we've stayed in business since 2008.
