Drywall damage rarely fixes itself. A small nail pop becomes a visible bulge, a hairline ceiling crack widens with the next humidity swing, and a slow plumbing leak turns into a 4-foot soft spot that has to come out. Longview Drywall Pros has been repairing East Texas drywall since 2008. We carry the texture rigs, the setting-type compounds that handle our humidity, and the patience to make every patch invisible.
Common Drywall Damage in East Texas Homes
- βΊNail pops β drywall fasteners back out as framing dries and shrinks. Common in homes built during East Texas's quick-cycle construction booms.
- βΊSettling cracks β Longview sits on expansive red clay soil that swells in winter rain and shrinks in summer drought. Foundations shift seasonally, and hairline cracks appear above doorways, at ceiling-wall joints, and in long unbroken wall runs.
- βΊWater damage β roof leaks, plumbing leaks, AC condensate, and storm damage. Even a 'small' leak can soak a 3-foot section of drywall completely through.
- βΊLarge holes β doorknobs, furniture, accidents. Anything bigger than a baseball typically needs a backed patch rather than a quick mesh-and-mud.
- βΊCorner bead damage β metal or vinyl bead gets dinged by vacuums, moving furniture, or kids. The mud cracks away and the bead shows through.
- βΊTape failure β paper tape lifts at seams when humidity cycles dry out the mud. Common on 20+ year old homes that have never had a refresh.
Our Drywall Repair Process
- βΊ1. Moisture test β for any stain, soft spot, or suspected water damage, we test moisture content with a pin meter before opening the wall. Wet drywall must dry to under 16 percent before patching, or the patch will fail and mold will grow behind it.
- βΊ2. Cut back to sound material β we use a drywall saw to cut a clean rectangle past any damaged or wet board. Square cuts patch invisibly. Ragged tears do not.
- βΊ3. Install backing β for holes over 6 inches, we install wood furring strips or California patches so the patch has something rigid to attach to. Mesh-only patches over big holes will crack within a year.
- βΊ4. Tape and mud β paper tape over seams, then setting-type compound for the first coat. Setting-type mud (also called 'hot mud') cures by chemical reaction rather than evaporation, which is essential in our 80 percent summer humidity when premixed mud takes 24+ hours to dry.
- βΊ5. Three coats with progressively wider knives β feathered 12 to 16 inches past the patch edge so the transition disappears.
- βΊ6. Sand and prime β sand to match adjacent surface, then spot-prime so the new patch absorbs paint the same way the old wall does.
- βΊ7. Texture match β we match orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, or hand texture to the surrounding wall. Then primer and paint.
Repair vs Replace β When to Choose Each
- βΊRepair makes sense for: holes under 12 inches, hairline cracks, nail pops, isolated water stains where the leak is fixed and drywall tests dry, and minor corner bead damage.
- βΊReplace is the right call for: any drywall affected by active mold (mold cannot be cleaned out of drywall β it must be removed and disposed of as contaminated material), fire-damaged drywall, drywall that has been wet long enough to delaminate or sag, pre-1978 drywall that may contain asbestos in the joint compound, and any wall with widespread cracking from foundation movement that hasn't been addressed.
Why East Texas Humidity Matters for Repair
Our 49 inches of annual rainfall and 80 percent summer humidity changes how drywall mud behaves. Premixed all-purpose joint compound is mostly water β in Houston, Dallas, or Longview it takes far longer to dry between coats than the can says, sometimes 24 to 36 hours per coat instead of the listed 8. We use setting-type compound (Durabond, Easy Sand) for tape and fill coats. These mud powders cure chemically, not by evaporation, so a 90-minute compound is dry in 90 minutes regardless of humidity. The result is a repair that finishes in 2 days instead of 5 β and a tape coat that does not lift the next time the AC kicks off.
Mold and Water Damage β Read This First
If your drywall is stained, soft, or smells musty, do not just paint over it. Mold grows behind drywall in 24 to 48 hours in East Texas conditions, and painting over it traps the problem. We will moisture-test, cut out affected board, inspect the cavity for mold and ongoing leaks, and recommend remediation if mold growth is visible. For any mold area larger than 10 square feet, Texas law requires a licensed mold remediator β we coordinate with vetted local partners.
